BIO

Hugo Hutchins (he/him) is a writer and artist based in London. Spanning writing and ceramics, his work is unashamedly intertwined with pop culture. An aesthetic way of working, it often fluctuates between the contemplative and the trivial. He thinks the best memes are most often found on the platform formerly known as Twitter  - 10% of his iPhone camera roll is comprised of screenshots of them.

In 2021 he self-published his debut publication ‘Onedirectionfuturism’ which explores the relationship between whiteness, masculinity and queerness through the lens of the boyband One Direction. Since publication it has been sold in over 30 countries and in 2022 it was selected to be a part of the 7th Artists Self-Publishing Fair in partnership with Camden Arts Centre. Selected talks and commissions include a research based presentation on the topic of ‘Onedirectionfuturism’ to the RCA’s School of Arts & Humanities Critical and Historical Studies cohort (2020) and a video commission from The British Film Institute on fan culture for the London Film Festival (2021). In 2023 he was awarded the Fresh Talent Award at the British Ceramics Biennial.
